Bootup takes 10 minutes -- GETTING WORSE

This is a follow-up to my "Bootup takes 10-15 minutes" message of a few
days ago.

Things seem to have gotten worse. After failing to get Linux to find the
CD-ROM, I logged in as root and ran setup again. Yikes! Now even setup
can't find the CD-ROM. Under setup, I selected Source, then Install from
CD-ROM, and I got the following error message:
    "INVALID DIRECTORY ENTERED
Sorry - the CD-ROM could not be found. Please check to make sure
that it is mounted beneath /cdrom and try again.
     (Directory given: /cdrom/slakware)"

Bootup takes 10 minutes -- GETTING WORSE

I had a problem similar to this. My CD-ROM was configured as the
master for its IDE bus, and the HDD was slave. All dandy-fine, except
that the manufacturer of the CD-ROM apparently doesn't know how to
implement IDE mastering. The bus kept getting reset, introducing
delays of up to 40 seconds per. My OS would sometimes recognize the
CD, sometimes not, and things were a pain. Setting the CD to slave and
the HDD to master fixed the problem completely.

Also, at work a SCSI-based system had some problems like this that
turned out to be a bad connector on the SCSI cable.

I read a lot of headers here such as "dumb question". They're not dumb of
course. I hope this isn't a dumb answer( in question form) ....
Um, is there a a data CD in the drive?
