Which problem are you having, getting the modem answered or getting UUCP
operational?

I have agetty running on all terminals and the modem port, and UUCP set
up to operate from it.  agetty requires a slight reporgramming of the
modem profile, but it can be done.

Not sure if this help a bit , but I managed to get uugetty to answer after
say (3) rings by changing the        WAITFOR=RING    to read
                                     WAITFOR=RING\r\n\r\nRING\r\n\r\nRING
Note:
My modem responds like this when someone calls:
RING
     <----empty line
RING
     <----empty line
RING
and so on

That's why the double \r\n between RING
Your modem might respond different...test it by running e.g.minicom with
auto-answer disabled (ATS0=0 for Rockwell based modems) and have someone
call you .Then just watch the "format" of RING.If it does not jump one line
like mine then you don't need \r\n\r\n just \r\n

I tried..
