   What are the steps I have to follow If I modify modules.conf

As root open the file with your choice of editor (vi, emacs, pico, etc)
and know what you need to change/add/delete.

Always back it up safely.

Have a rescue CD or floppy on hand.

Re-read it before you reboot.

And if you have SCSI modules listed there with your / partition on a SCSI
drive, be certain to run "mkinitrd" and have your lilo.conf/grub.conf edited
to support it.

Many and maybe none. Depending on what you are trying to do. Why do you want
to modify modules.conf ?
