Dual Boot configuration w/ LILO and 2 SCSI Disks
My problem configuration....

1 Dell PowerEdge 1650 with internal Ultra 160 LVD SCSI controller, and
two 18GB drives
Win2K installed as the sole owner of target 0  disk (/dev/sda)

Windows installation works fine.  I want to install RedHat 8.0 as sole owner
of the target 1 drive,
(/dev/sdb) using LILO as the boot loader, but also using the SCSI controller
to point to the boot drive.  So, for example when I want to boot into Linux,
I do a Ctrl-A at post to go into the Adaptec SCSI card BIOS, and chang the
boot drive to the target 1 device, instead of target 0.

Ran RedHat installaion, using Disk Druid to manually partition drive. Put
/boot in the first partion
(/dev/sdb1)

RedHat's /etc/lilo.conf has the following line in the main configuration:

    boot=/dev/sdb1

But when I try to boot, using target 1 as the boot device, I get " LI  " and
then then hang.

The folks for whom I'm building this configuration don't want LILO on the
MBR of /dev/sda, so I'm trying to skin the cat this way at thier request.
I'm hoping some of you LILO wizards will know the hoops I have to jump
through in order to get this to work.

    All suggestions will be appreciated.

    Cheers...   Jeff.

Did you make your boot partition /dev/sdb1
bootable?

Had 2 scsi drives at 1 time and now 2 ide drives (cheaper).  Windows was
on /dev/sda and linux on /dev/sdb; used bootpart to setup and used the
ntloader to boot linux, selectable from the boot menu and/or linux may
be made the default os to boot.  Bootpart 2.5 is the latest version
and will work with ntfs5; lilo should be installed on the "boot partition"
of linux, e.g. "/", whatever that partition is.

Won't need to do the crtl-a, just need to have the windows partition as
the active partion.  Using the ntloader to boot linux has the advantage
of not having any windows "service packs" mess-up the booting process
as is possible with lilo, grub...

Dual Boot configuration w/ LILO and 2 SCSI Disks
Jeff,

Thanks for the reply.  I am confused, though, as I am only familiar with
the concept of making a partition
'bootable' with respect to FDISK and WinXX systems.  Every disk has a master
boot record but I am not
familiar with Linux how to make a disk 'bootable'.  All I did was install
Linux, using Disk Druid.  It setup all of
the partitions on that disk, and installed LILO.  The wierdest thing about
this situation, is that even the boot
diskette that RedHat created during the installation, won't work when I try
to boot from it.  It says it can't find
the kernel image.

So, getting back, I don't understand what you mean, so could you explain
how I would make /dev/sdb1
'bootable'.

    Thanks again for the reply.

        Cheers....

            Jeff

lilo -A /dev/sdb  1

Also be sure there is a Master Boot Record on /dev/sdb from either fdisk, or

lilo -M /dev/sdb

Your main problem is probably that the BIOS device code is changing from the
time you install LILO to when you boot.  Your other problem is using RedHat --
they make a good distro, except they distribute a LILO that is 3 years out of
date.

1.  If you want to continue with the RedHat distro, be sure you have in the
lilo.conf file:

lba32                           # 32-bit disk addressing
disk = /dev/sdb   bios = 0x80   # a lie, but not at boot time

2.  Use a newer LILO, one with support for the -A and -M switches.
(On a Dell machine with a GeForce video card, you'll need 22.5.1-beta1.  Any
other video card, the mainline release 22.5 is okay.)

Are you sure this will work?
How will the BIOS know it is meant to be looking at sdb rather than sda?

Some BIOS' give you an option of which to boot.  Otherwise, if you can't put a
boot record on /dev/sda, the master drive, then you'll have to get to sdb from
a floppy.
