Samba 2.2.1a, winXP and Browse List
Hey all,

Just set up RedHat 7.2 w/ rpm's supplied by default on the two ISO's.  The
samba version is 2.2.1a.  I can directly map shares on the linux box using
Xp, but the new linux machine never shows up in Xp's browse list:

"My Netwok Places
    Microsoft Windows Network
Ale" <-- the common workgroup, using MS terminology.

My Rhat 6.0/6.2 box, Testbed does show up in this list, as do other
winblows machines.

I did change the registry entry in XP to allow unencrypted passwords; it's

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters]
"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:00000001

Only one thing appears to have changed in result:
before the reg change, I had to map a share using ip #, now I can do it
successfully with the hostname, AMD400 (of the linux box).  But the machine
still doesn't appear in the browse list.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to correct this?  Is it a setting in the
smb.conf ?  Something along the lines of "~Announce~"?  Do I need a domain
server, the Xp machine or perhaps the Linux box?  I have user level
security at present.

Thanks for suggestions, I know this is a bit confused: that reflects my
state of understanding these wide ranging topics..../ts

First, update your samba to the latest RedHat distribution. There have been
patches to support Windows XP.

Also, *NEVER* allow unencrypted passwords for SMB. The only reason to ever
do that was to support Windows for Workgroups.

Nico,  thanks for that advice; I will update SAMBA and look for the other
updates I'm sure are also out.

It's interesting that all of the advice I found on web-searches (which must
have been out of date) advocated the plain text passwds, as above, in
various guises.  This server is on the LAN, at home, behind any gate to the
'net, and all users are trusted, but as a matter of good practice, I agree
with the scurity issue that would be involved in using plain text.
