Problems with RedHat 7.3 and Shuttle XPC SS51
I am using a new shuttle SS51, with the SiS651/962 chipset.  I believe that
there is a chipset support problem, and the fix is in the 2.4.19 kernel
update.  Correct me if I am wrong, please.  I am experiencing the following

When doing a large FTP or anything the requires disk access the machine
become unresponsive.  cannot open another terminal or switch between virtual
tty's.  Mouse won't even move in X.   Once disk access is done, system
returns to normal.

Setup is as follows.    Shuttle XPC SS51 with intel celeron 1.8Ghz, one
mushkin DDR333 512MB Ram,  Nvidia gForce 2MX 200 graphics, Liteon 16 DVD
drive, western digital 60GB drive, everything else stock.  (realtek onboard
NIC, sound etc.).   HAve disabled on board video.

My real problem is when I try and compile a new kernel it takes days. and I
have been unsuccesful.  Also it appears that redhat mess's with the source,
so the patches don't work.  I downloaded the 2.4.19 source, but that looses
all of the redhat defaults (make oldconfig) doesn't work.  Does anyone have
a working redhat 2.4.19 kernel, or have some suggestions as to how to fix
this issue.  A working kernel would be the bomb....

Please help a wanna be Linux user.....

Thanks in advance....

Sounds like a disk driver issue.

Well, it shouldn't. Should be more like 20minutes to 2 hours. Can you
pinpoint what's taking all the time (does top show the machine as
idle, or...)?

The old config is stored in the .Config file inside the kernel source
directory. If you just want to use RedHat's config, copy .Config from
redhat's kernel sources into the 2.4.19 kernel source directory, and
do 'make oldconfig'. Suggestion: perhaps you should try the latest
2.4.20 pre patch while you're at it. Also, rather than doing a 'make
oldconfig', you could just configure it yourself, through 'make
menuconfig' or whatnot. It's really not that complicated, and you do
know what hardware you have.

Good luck,

Dara Hazeghi

P.S. I am considering getting such a machine, so I'm very curious to
see if these issues can be solved!

Problems with RedHat 7.3 and Shuttle XPC SS51

I am close to purchasing a Shuttle SS51 to run Red Hat 7.3 on myself.
Did you ever get this to work? I am trying to hold off until I find
out if the machine is compatible with RH 7.3

I did get it to work, but it was never quite stable.  Always intermitten
little hangs, or time outs, or pauses that could never be tracked down.   My
information tells me that the 2.4.20 will address the SIS chipset issues.  I
have switched to and intel 845E based board and new system and have not had
any problems.  I do still have the XPC, and will return it to linux use if
the issues do get resolved.

Anyone has tried installing any other linux distributions on SS51?
I'm thinking about purchasing one as my home server.  Thanks.

Yes, it worked for me.  I have sold that unit off as a multimedia server
(I build them in my spae time as a home business now).  I believe it came
with information on either the web site or in the manual for Linux Drivers
for the built in hardware.  I don't remember as this was months ago now
but I think it ran everything OK, sound and video included.

Keep in mind too that the flavor of the month was RH7.3 , not 8.0.  May
make a difference.

Good luck.  I love those boxes.

See the pictures of the ones I build on my site:

Hi!  I'm using the same XPC as you guys to run RedHat 7.3  However I got a
video problem, the installation don't have the video chipset from SiS and
hence I choose the default setting.  However when I finished installation
and get into X-window, it show 800X600 while the system tells it's a
1024X768.  And the screen is real not good to view.
Any idea?
