 xvidtune
This is probably a simple problem, but I cannot get the settings from
xvidtune to stick. The desktop is displayed slightly off the monitor
which xvidtune fixes but once shutdown and restarted, the change has
been lost. I'm using Openlinux 2.3 with KDE. I've tried saving the
settings as root but to no avail. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance,
Jon.

After you have the display set up the way you want it, hit the "show"
button
in xvidtune. That will cause the current active modeline to be written
to the
terminal from which you called xvidtune. You can then, as root, edit
/etc/X11/XF86Config,
look for the original, but not-quite-perfect modeline, comment it out
with a "#' in the
first column, go back and use the mouse to snarf up the new improved
modeline and
then insert it in the old one's place. The next time you launch X you
will be in business.

Worst comes to worst write down the settings from xvidtune, edit your
XF86Config file (use find or locate to find out where this file is if
you're not sure) and find the line for the specific resolution your using
and put in the numbers from xvidtune that made the screen look correct.
I used this method for the older XFree versions. The newer XFree and
xvidtune allows you to "apply" the changes via a tab in xvidtune and the
setting is actually saved into XF86Config.
