DOSEMU 0.6 -How to make it work right?-
Hello all.

I just yesterday downloaded and installed dosemu 0.6.1.  It seems
to work mediocre, I guess.  As an original user of .53, I don't think
that I'm MAJORLY impressed.  The biggest improvements have to do with
dosemu being so much nicer to the system in the background.  There are a
couple things that I'm puzzled on, however..

1.) When I run "dos", everything pops up fine, but I have no blinking
cursor.  And when I run DOS programs, half the text is blinking.  This
can weirdly enough be alleviated (with warnings, no doubt, from DOSEMU)
by running "dos" after starting a script (typescript file)...  Bizaare?

2.) I know I'm missing something here, but I can't seem to find the
solution.  Xdos gives me a prompt that does nothing except scroll upon
[ENTER].  However, running plain old "dos" in an Xterm works just great
(apparently).

3.) How can anyone ever run DOOM, CIVILIZATION, let alone SCORCH
through dosemu??  I'm so jealous.  All attempts to run anything
interesting fail instantly and horribly, ultimately resulting in a blind
halt from some other console, and then a hard reset.  What must I do to
make my dosemu stable?

4.) My mouse dies often.  But I think that I have that isolated to
hardware related things, so I'm not overly worried about that.  I am
pretty sure that I can get it working right.

That's about it.  At least the major issues.  I really like dosemu, and I
want to thank the creators for a wonderful product (I know I came off
like a jerk but I'm a little frustrated at having something I want to
work so badly, work so.....badly).  I would really appreciate any help
that any kind soul could offer me.  I know that a lot is in the docs,
buried for the lucky hunters, but I'm having trouble finding it.  And
I've gone through my dosemu.conf with a fine-tooth comb.  Breifly, my setup:

Linux 1.2.2
gcc 2.5.8.
12MB RAM.
14MB swap.
JAX 8241 S3-805 VLB card.
730 MB 1/2 DOS, 1/2 Linux partitioned IDE.
A4Tech 3 button mouse.

If you can help me get my bugs ironed out, I would really be greatful!
If you need any other info, I'd me happy to mail it to you.  Thank you in
advance!

-Bryan

I'd have liked to get rid of this one too.

make sure you have this in /etc/dosemu.conf :

  X { updatefreq 5 title "DOS in a BOX" icon_name "xdos" keycode }

( there will be blinking cursor :)

Some S3 cards with funny chipsets do not work (like DStealth 64, <sigh>)

Get either mouse patch or new 0.60.2 from ftp.funet.fi (no luck with
  graphics though).

Yes, and the latest version, 0.60.2, is the first version that runs
DOOM at full speed. Apperently a timer emulation problem caused DOOM
to update the screen less often then the system had capacity to do.

It's nice to play DOOM2 and be able to feel when the system does other
things (you notice a drop in the refresh rate).

Hints:

(I have DOOM2 configured to not use MOUSE or SOUND.)
(You need to have dosemu configured to use raw keyboard acces.)
(Be careful when you switch virtual console in dos, DOOM looks
when I switch into X11 and then back, text consoles are OK.)

There are probably other tweaks you need to do to /etc/dosemu.conf.
Also, you need to apply the kernel patch in the dpmi subdirectory.

Btw, this version of dosemu runs matlab-3.5k (it uses the pharlap
dos extender.)

Really?  I've run Heretic under dosemu and I never installed the kernel patch.

DOSEMU 0.6 -How to make it work right?-

I had to do the following:

install ansi_xterm (I had to mess around with main.c a little bit
to get it to compile on Linux)
make sure xdos in /usr/bin points to /usr/bin/xtermdos and not to
                                /usr/bin/dos

then it worked just great (if I only could get my programs to run now...)

In your /etc/conf, in X { ... } line insert the word "keycode".  Like
this:

X { updatefreq 8 title "DOS in a BOX" icon_name "xdos" keycode }
