How should I partition my 4GIG Seagate?

This is a paragraph from the hardware how-to:
Large IDE drives will work fine with Linux. With kernels prior to
about 1.1.47 you will need to run with LBA disabled which may confuse
DOS if you wish to share the drive. Your boot partition must lie in
the first 1024 cylinders due to PC BIOS limitations.
Does this mean that the boot partition must be in the first 1024 cyls just for
the older kernels or for any Linux kernels? I plan to run 1.1.7x at least,
but I don't know what kernel I'll have to install with. If I install a 1.1.5x
kernel, can I do so on a WD2850 towards the end of the drive? I plan to give
about 500MB to DOS and about 300 to Linux. I've been waiting to install it
because I don't know if Linux has to be installed first in the lower part of
the drive. My system does support LBA. And the new drive will be hdb1, hdb2,
and hdb3. Probably something like:
hdb1 = 500mb DOS
hdb2 = 12mb Linux swap
hdb3 = 300 (balance)mb Linux ext2
I'll want to install A, AP, D, N, X, XAP, XD, and maybe more on this
partition, as well as have room to play around. Should I shave 100MB away
from DOS and do more of an even split of the drive?
