Need help with xvidtune (XFree86 4.0.3)
Hi All,

I would appreciate some help with my little problem...

Because I have a rather off-center picture, I've been trying to use
xvidtune to customize the video mode in my XFree86-4 file.

When I use xvidtune, everything goes as planned, and I am able to tune my
monitor the way I want it. I press the button to show me the mode line,
and add the line into my XFree86-4 configuration file under /etc/X11 ..

The problems happen when I try to restart the X server.
The modeline always gets rejected, with the following error message:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode "1600x1200" has %; discarding mode

What on earth is this trying to tell me?!? Here's the mode from my file:

        # Mode "1600x1200"
                # DotClock 202.50
                # HTimings 1600 1628 1820 2124
                # VTimings 1200 1201 1204 1238
                # Flags "+Hsync" "+Vsync"
        # EndMode

(Commented out, until I can get it working that is)
For your reference, the following are also in the Monitor section:

        HorizSync   30 - 95
        VertRefresh 50 - 160

I'm using NVIDIA's drivers, with XFree86 4.0.3. Can anyone help?

Your ModeLine wants to look like

# 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz, 105.77 kHz hsync
Modeline "1600x1200"  220    1600 1616 1808 2080  1200 1204 1207 1244
+HSync +VSync

with, of course, the appropriate values.

Yes, I tried this form as well (and got the same result, unfortunately)..
I've tried reformatting the line in any number of ways and always get the
same result (so it appears to be ok in terms of syntax)..

So I'm left with the conclusion that some of the values are incorrect. I
didn't think it was possible for xvidtune to produce values which won't work
when placed directly on the ModeLine, but perhaps I was wrong?

I had some problems with configuring a setup because of this.  Mileage has
varied with the Nvidia binary drivers, are you using the 1.0-1251 ones?

I read somewhere in a changelog that a problem with config was fixed, so
maybe you can simply upgrade them.  Of course I cannot remember the exact
details, and as it was SuSE info it may very well not be applicable in your
case.  It might well have been in their XFree-4.0.3 changelog.

The other possibility might be XFree-4.1 the nv driver has been improved
and does more acceleration, unless you're 3D-{*filter*}, or OpenGL design work
it ought to be good enough.

Mm, yes.. well, the 1.0 version anyway. I'm not sure what the build number
is. I'll check it later when I get home.

Just taking a guess here, could it be that xvidtune has indicated something
too close to the horizontal and vertical scan limits?? Maybe if I tweak it
some more manually?? (Not sure about the calculations though)..

I would be happy with the nv driver (it works quite well, after all), but in
fact I do a little bit of {*filter*} every now and then..
