 Debian (Woody) IO-APIC problem?
Hello, folks, I am having a heck of a time getting a system up and
running, and hope someone here can help.

Background:
I have a new machine I assembled myself. the hardware is:

dual Athlon MP 1800+
1GB memory
ASUS A7M266-d mobo
ATI Radeon 8500 video card
IDM 60GB HD

Due to the newness of my video card, I must run Xfree86 4.x.x, as it
is un-supported in 3.x.x.

I downloaded Debian 2.2R5 (Potato) and can successfully install it,
but without X. I installed and connected myself to a network and used
apt-get to grab the Woody distribution, per the Debian webpage. I was
able to download all the packages I selected o.k., and chose the
2.4.17-686-smp kernel to install.

Here is the problem: Upon boot, everything starts up o.k., both CPU's
are detected, then I get the messages

ENABLING IO-APIC IRQs
Setting 2 in the phys_id_present_map
... changing IO-APIC physical APIC ID to 2 ... ok.
.. TIMER: vector=0x31 pin1=2 pin2=0

and then the system hangs.

From a previous futile attempt at re-compiling Potato to include SMP,
I recall reading a document saying that there could be IO-APIC
conflicts in SMP kernels. Unfortunately, I did not understand the
discussion, and don't know what to do.

I realize I probably need to provide some more information, which I
will happily do if I someone tells me what to provide.

I would greatly appreciate a pointer and/or suggestion. My real goal
is simply to have my SMP box working with XFree86 4.x.x. I tried using
a RH7.2 install CD, but I am not able to boot from the CD, nor from a
boot floppy as outlined in RH docs. I don't know what the deal is
there, but since the Potato CD's booted just fine, I don't think it is
a hardware problem.

Thanks,

Dan

 Debian (Woody) IO-APIC problem?

Boot with the noapic param. And check BootPrompt HOWTo for more
options.
