LANGUAGE BRIDGE
"SIMPLY CROSS A SHORT BRIDGE AND LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE"
The LANGUAGE BRIDGE is self-instructional course of express
learning of foreign languages. The Language Bridge is a new and
effective instrument in acquiring English or Russian, (available
now), or Spanish or German or French languages (will be available
4th quarter 1993) by native speakers of English, Russian,
Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish languages.
The Language Bridge is based on three unconventional statements:
1. A person does not think in his or her own native language.
A person thinks in his or her own code language, which is directly
and uniquely related to his or her native language. This creates
an illusion that we think in our native language.
2. SPEAKING is a process that takes place without the involvement
of our conscience; it is purely an automatic process and hence a
subconscious one.
When we SPEAK, i.e., express our attitude toward a certain situation
that we evaluate with our conscience, we fulfill the task
automatically -- we do not think HOW TO SAY.
When we attempt to learn a foreign language, we often try to speak
using our conscience: in doing so, we are trying to accomplish an
unnatural task.
3. A foreign language should not be memorized but rather
acquired through training by using multiple simultaneous repetition.
The word blocks of a new language should never be mixed or compared
with your native language.
A student uses his or her own native language only for creating
an image or depicting a situation that is intertwined with foreign
language word blocks. Next time when the situation arises with
similar images, you will automatically pronounce correct word
blocks, as you do subconsciously in your native language.
The strength of the Language Bridge self-instruction course
consists in that it helps any student become talented in acquiring a
foreign language by overcoming the main reason of failure -- our
attempts to bring a foreign language through the native tongue.
Language Bridge facilitates student's reorientation or attunement to
the main component of a modern foreign language study -- creation of
the link IMAGE = WORD in contrast to the existing techniques that
use the link WORD (ENGLISH) = WORD (FOREIGN LANGUAGE). Further
progress in the study of a foreign language by any other advanced
level or grammar-based approach will benefit tremendously if given
after initiation into a foreign language by using the Language
Bridge technique.
This nongrammar-based approach helps to open a childlike part of
your mind and is of a special value for both acquiring a foreign
language in a school or a college and for prevocational training of
ESL for {*filter*}s.
The failure of attempts to learn a foreign language in school
is preprogrammed because there is nothing in common between
learning any subject in school and learning a foreign language.
The mechanisms are totally different. The reason of poor mastery
of a foreign language is our trying to memorize it but our memory
has a unique self-protective capability: it keeps stored
information only for a certain time if you use the information
frequently. Besides, the response time of memory is low and
insufficient for a fluent expression of our thoughts.
The text arrangement of the lessons in the LANGUAGE BRIDGE is
unique and based on the premise that a spoken language consists of
blocks of words. Each text consists of three or four short lines
that contain a block of words; this arrangement facilitates visual
memorization of described images and situations. After multiple
simultaneous repetition, the situations described in the lessons are
easily intertwined with the block of words, thus creating an
automatic link IMAGE=WORD(S).
The Language Bridge is currently designed for speakers of Russian
or English to learn one another's languages; the technique can be
adapted easily to teach students in any language. The book is
supplemented with 6 audio tapes of all 31 lessons recorded in
special English (or special Russian) by a native speaker. Each
lesson consists of a text and drills. The first ten lessons are
based on a small number of words and images for initial
familiarization and drilling. The following 21 lessons consist of
independent, individual texts on various conversational topics such
as: Your House, Visiting Friends, Buying a Car, Job Interview,
Buying the Week's Groceries, Hunting for a Job, Chicago, Getting a
Driver's License, Computer, etc. The main objective of the drills
is to restructure the speaking process by developing a separate
language center in the brain for the new language and transferring
one's knowledge of the new language to this center.
The Language Bridge book provides complete dictionary for all 2300
words which are used throughout the course and an adequate
translation of all lessons and drills. You may look into a
dictionary or into the text translated into your native language,
but while you are reading the translation, follow the words with
your eyes and bite your tongue slightly between your teeth to keep
from vocalizing the words involuntarily and focus on the image of
the situation created in your mind. After multiple simultaneous
repetitions of word blocks recorded in a foreign language, while
having a clear vision of the situation in your mind, these words
will become linked to your own mental images. If you follow the
Language Bridge plan and work a few hours each day, after 6 weeks,
I guarantee, you will be able to converse fluently in your new
language environment.
