Command line history for programs (or atty)
   Hi,
we have several program we would like to equip with a command line
history mechanism even though these programs do not have this feature
build in. To do this we use a program called "atty" which works except
that it caused the terminal (xterm) to beep every time the "del" key
is hit. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Perhaps there
is another way (another program) that will give this command
line history mechanism? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a related note, one of the programs we want this command line
history mechanism for is S+ 3.1. S+ has a command line history build
in EXCEPT that it uses ctrl-p and ctrl-n to access the command history
and I really would like the up and down arrow keys to provide this
functions.  Is there a way to remap up and down arrow keys for the
durration of a program?

Thanks for any help.
