 Hello RS6000 model 250
An old model 250 Risc System 6000 (I always wondered what RS stood for) was
recently given to me. I need a little help getting it into a working state.
The bigest problem (i assume) is it didn't come with the key. If this is a
big problem, how can I go about getting one? The 2nd problem is I need to
get inside it, to check connections, and to see if it has a harddrive in it
(I can't tell by peeking through the grating on the sides).

There is a promising looking handle-like thing at the back, but I can't seem
to get anywhere with it. The key-lock is turned to service. Am I just not
putting enough force into bending the handle or do I need to press somewhere
else on the case to get it to open. I can see the edges, so it looks like
the top and sides slides/lifts off from the back and front.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

 Hello RS6000 model 250

My recollection is:
  disconnect all cables
  put key in service
push 'down' on 'handle' in the middle of the top at the back
pull case forward or pull 'guts' backward

 Hello RS6000 model 250
Hi there,
Ive just been out to the shed where Ive the identical system. Your
lucky, the key has to be in the service position to open the case.
You now need to press down the lever at the back some 1/2in to release
the catch then the outside case slides back. Once youve done this you
will find that there is an inside lid which dovetails into part of the
box. When youve undone the locking screrws youll be able to get inside
this to see the innards, not that thers much you can do there..
What is more interesting in getting it working is what have you got in
the 2 expansion slots, mine only has a 16/4 ethernet card and the other
was blanked off.  Does your have a video card installed?.  Mine has a
hard disk, memory floppy drive etc.
I also have the descriptive book by jim Hoskins  for the ibm risc 6000
series.
what else did you get with yours?   Monitor?, or  terminal?
Email me as there might be something mutual in getting both mine and
yours up and running, ive no experience of these ibm's..

 Hello RS6000 model 250

I hope you mean token ring card

Remember, there were video cards that could go into a slot - but more
common was the special video card slot that put the video card just above
the memory - so the card was parallel to the motherboard - and leaving
both cardslots still open

Hi shed and garage browsers!

I have the same 250 in my garage and got it up and running on AiX 4.3.3.09.
These are very easy systems. You just need a ASCI terminal like wyse, Ibm315
1,
dec vt100 or falcon, but you can also you an old dos pc or Windows95/98/2000
with terminal emulation program with VT220 emulation on the com port
(or hyperterminal). Use a fully wired null-modem cable to the S1 and most
likely it will come up just fine. You can also attach a scsi CD or 4mm or
8mm
tape device to backup or boot from. Max. mem is 256 Mb. If you install the
CDE or X-windows you don;t need a grafics card. Just use a X-server under
Windows and connect to the AiX and enjoy great X-windows!

Good Luck!
