 0653-175 Cannot find the current directory
What might cause error message "0653-175" ?
Here's an example of how the error is happening.
/tmp $ cd /tmp
/tmp $ ls -ld .
drwxrwxrwt   8 bin      bin         2048 Jul 11 17:39 .
/tmp $ ls -l xyzzy
ls: 0653-341 The file xyzzy does not exist.
/tmp $ date > xyzzy
/tmp $ ls -l xyzzy
-rw-rw-rw-   1 uncleben staff         29 Jul 11 17:43 xyzzy
/tmp $ du xyzzy
du: 0653-175 Cannot find the current directory.
/tmp $ rm xyzzy
/tmp $ ls -l xyzzy
ls: 0653-341 The file xyzzy does not exist.
/tmp $ du .
du: 0653-175 Cannot find the current directory.
/tmp $ du /tmp
du: 0653-175 Cannot find the current directory.
/tmp $ du xyzzy
du: 0653-175 Cannot find the current directory.
/tmp $ du
du: 0653-175 Cannot find the current directory.
/tmp $ exit

The AIX version is 4.3.3.

 0653-175 Cannot find the current directory
sounds like you might have a corrupted filesystem. check the error log
for any messages that might give tell-tale signs.

ls -i will show the inode # of the files, if they are all the same that
could be clue of  corrupted files or worse the filesystem.

to correct you will have to umount the problem FS and run fsck on it.

if it's a permission related problem i would expect an error message to
the effect of "permission denied".

Thank you, Nicholas Dronen.

"pwd" failed in csh
not just in the "/tmp" filesystem
but also in ALL the other filesystems
except the "/" root filesystem.

Upon further investigation, I learned that
the customer's site had a recent disk crash and
they restored the rootvg by some sort of trial and error,
without a "mksysb" tape.

No doubt, if they had had a recent mksysb tape,
their mount points would have been restored properly.

I wonder if anything else got fsck'd up at the site
by the absence of a proper mksysb.
