AIX 4.2 System hang with 888 LED code
A 888 (or triple-8 as we call them) is a crash. The system is not "hung"
when you get a 888, it's down and out. Many things cause 888's,
sometimes hardware.
An R50 will have a yellow reset button on the front - press it to
advance from the 888 to the next code, write it down, and so on until
you get back to the 888. One of those codes will be a dump code, 0cX
where X can tell you whether the dump was successful or not.
Check your diagnostic information manual that came with your R50 and it
should tell you whether it's hardware or software related. If hardware,
call IBM and place a hardware call. If software, you should look at your
AIX level and see if there are any RML's (Recommended Maintenance Level
- another term for a patch tape) available that you haven't yet
installed.
