It would seem you don't know far enough.  But first a little
correction of terminology.

You can't kill a zombie *because it's already dead.*  A
zombie is a dead process that is waiting for its parent
process to "reap" it (perform some variant of wait() to
collect its return code).  It is only an entry in the
process table with a return code, nothing else.  If
you want to get it out of the process table (and off
your ps listings), kill the zombie's parent.  PID 1
(init) will become the zombie's new parent, and init
automatically reaps all its dead children.  End of
