Differences between binary & ascii modes in ftp

The difference will show up when you are transfering a file from say a windows machine to a unix machine or vice-versa.

Windows has 2 chars for newline (015 and 012) in that order, while unix uses just 012. So, a ftp client transfering file in ascii mode from such machines will take care of the differnce and add or strip the
015 char as required.

You will note that the file size changes when tansfering file in ascii mode from windows to unix and vice-versa. The reason is cited above.

Differences between binary & ascii modes in ftp
Hi All,
Can Anyone tell me the difference between transferring a file in
binary mode and an ascii mode in an ftp session. I know binary files and executables are transferred in binary mode and text files are transfeered usually in ascii mode. But what exactly, is the difference.

Thanks,
Venu.

here is a clue, something to do with 7 or 8 bit transfer:
http://www.telematik.informatik.uni-karlsruhe.de/rechenbetrieb/DEC/un...
lets add to the confusion:
 type [type-name]
Set the FTP file transfer type to type-name.  If type-name is
unspecified, write the current type to stdout.  Ascii, binary,
and tenex are the types currently supported.
not confusing enough:
http://coba.shsu.edu/help/FTP/faq.html
 for FTP
(common other modes, are LZ for VAX Multinet servers, tenex or image for some others).

Binary mode will transfer a file exactly as it is - no changes.
ASCII mode will translate character sets and end-of-line characters
according to the operating systems at each end of the transfer (e.g NT uses
newline-carriage return pairs at the end of each line while Unix only
requires neline characters). If both operating systems are the same (e.g.
Unix<->Unix) then the default mode will be binary anyway as no translation
will be needed.
