Wanted: Compiler 4 bourne-shell scripts
: I'm searchhing for a compiler 4 bourne-shell scripts, to
: get a better performance on the scripts I have.
: Does anybody know of a compiler to do that (and where I can
: get it)?
To quote from my FAQ "UNIX shell differences and how to change your shell
(Monthly Posting)" available at all good mirrors of rftm.mit.edu.
A commercial "compiler" (CCsh) is available for the Bourne shell, this
can provide extra speed on some applications. For more information

If you actually gain any benefit from this depends mainly on what sort of
script you compile with it. Scripts that spend most of their time in
external programs will hardly benefit from it, while scripts that use the
shell internals (and possibly a few of the simple utilities, I don't really
know how clever it is) a lot should gain quite a bit.
As an alternative solution you may wish try recoding your scripts in perl,
(especially if they are more programs than batch files) since they
generally tend to be quicker than the shell script version of the same
