We sometimes get this when doing a cpio backup.
It often comes in the middle (cpio has gone fine for a while
but then this error message appears). Any guesses
which could cause this? Bad tapes (have changed), dirty
tape drive (have been cleaned) what else? Tape drive
is exabyte 5GB and OS is Pyramid SVR4.1.

How old is the tape drive?  I found from past experience that
after a couple years of use (at a few hours a day) the heads
need to be replaced.
