The PC Plus SUSE Distro - any good?
I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who can tell me if
this distro is any good, or if I should go for Redhat. I do know that
someone on alt.fan.elite was {*filter*}ing mightily.

Please bear in mind that I live in (very) rural Devon(UK), and have
little access to specialist computer stores. I personally don't count
PC World. (ick!)

Thanks in advance.

In my opinion SuSE is the best distribution.
I had success with Slackware and RedHat, and I think SuSE combines
best of both: flexebility of Slackware and easy instalation of RedHat.
Besides that their distribution comes with huge pile of applications.
In order to get it you don't have to go to a computer store, just visit

Second that.  I've always gotten my money's worth out of S.u.S.E.  Very
professional, friendly, honestly interested in my success with Linux.

SuSE wa the first distributon I tried to install, I had so many problems
getting everything (particularly PPP) running, I installed Redhat and
everything worked from the box pretty much. I've since installed SuSE and it
went in fine,, mainly due to what I learned from redhat. In short, my advice,
go for Redhat first.
If you're having problems finding it, there are a couple of places I found
that resell the cheapbytes CDs by mail order, one was www.polo.demon.co.uk,
can't remember the address of the other though.

The PC Plus SUSE Distro - any good?
Hello Sam,

I bought and installed SuSE 5.3 about ten days ago.
I am really happy with it. I used Slackware for a few years,
and Caldera for about 6 months before this.

Since I use Linux for my work (home office), the $50 for the
the SuSE distribution (with a book) was a good purchase.

Have fun!,

Well thanks for the advice - I've since read a message from someone
else who used this specific distro, and loved it.

This distro, incidentally, is a special, one-off one CD version of
5.2, given away free on the cover of PCPlus magazine. (The magazine
costs about 5, and comes with other software, too. Good value or
what?)

Oh yeah - PCPlus & SUSE co-operated on this - and the Manual is
supplied as a .pdf file.

Thanks again.

go ahead and buy the  magazine
i install it with no problems.
if you have one disk - you should make a partition in which to run linux and
another one for the linux swap file. made it with fips.exe which is suplied
with the cd.
was quick and easy just follow the instructions.
my computer automatically loads win95 and if i want to use linux - i insert
a diskette in drive a

have fun

Just look at the responces to good to be true

Only catch is I have jet to get it to connect to clara.net but some one
elce
has and it sure beats Red Hat for ease of use. KDE is great and YAST.
The use of the LibC 5 is good to.

I can buy it at my local Microcenter ;-)
If there is a Microcenter near you, check it out.
Otherwise, you can buy from www.cheapbytes.com or
www.suse.com, etc.

From: sev...@clara.net (Sam Vere (the fantom))

I'm a newbie, too.  I tried...

Red Hat 5.1:  Installation was VERY easy.

Slackware 3.5:  Installation was HARD.

SuSE 5.3:  Installation was just right. :-)

I LOVE SuSE 5.3!!!!!!!  It came with 5
CDs!!!  I installed KDE.  It was BEAUTIFUL.

Yes, Suse is a better installation.  Lots of help
in two languages, though I didn't think much of
   the magazine text.

You can read a wide variety of text files on the CD
with DOS etc. to get pre-help.

SUSE, after installation, can read the rpm redhat
   package manager program set.

Michael Kofler's "Linux: Install, configure, use"
is good in that it mentions differences all the way
   through about the differing installations.
