ftp error: 421 Service not available
I have a Redhat 6.1 box and I have recently experianced a problem connecting
to the machine via ftp. I get the error:
421 Service not available
when trying to connect to my machine. I have been successfully connecting
to the box via ftp for about 4 months. This error occurs before a login
prompt or password prompt, and it happens when I am ftping remotely or
trying it from the console (ftping to localhost).
My /etc/inetd.conf line for ftp looks like this:
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -a -l
in.ftpd is really wu-ftpd-2.6.0-3.
I do have a line for in.ftpd in my hosts.allow file (I disallow everything
in hosts.deny) but I commented this out, restarted inetd, and that had no
effect on my situation. I can ssh into the machine fine (along with httpd
access) and those are restricted as well.
I do have a ftpaccess file (which is switched on by the -a switch in my
/etc/inetd.conf file). It has not changed since I could connect via ftp.
I can do reverse lookups on both my server and the remote machine I'm trying
to connect from, so I don't think it's a DNS issue (ssh uses reverse lookups
also, so I don't think that's the problem)
I'm stumped! Can anyone give me a suggestion on what to do or look for?
Thanks!!
