 RH 6.0 & 3C905C TXM Problems
We just purchased some Dell Dimension machines and they come with the
3Com 3C905C TXM NIC cards. RedHat claims that these cards are not
supported and neither are the Netgear FX310 TX nor the 3C905B TX. They
claim that the best card to buy is the 3Com 3c595. Unfortunately, I
can't find this card at our local computer stores.

I tried the Boomerang drivers from
http://www.**-**.com/
and those don't seem to work either.

This is getting frustrating. After spending $78.00 for "support", I
don't feel that I'm getting my money's worth.

Any ideas for getting the 3Com 3C905C TXM cards working? When I try to
do an insmod 3c59x, I get an error message that the "device or resource
is busy." When I try to specify 3c59x during the install of RH6.0, I
get an error message that it can't find the card.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, I meant to say "Cyclone" and *NOT* "Boomerang" in my previous
article.

I can't speak for the other cards, but the 3C905B TX is most definitely
supported, at least in the 2.2.XX kernels. I never tried it with 2.0.XX.
It is of course a PCI card. I compiled the driver directly into the
kernel as opposed to using the module, although that shouldn't matter -
I only did that because the card is always in use so no advantage to
using a module.

Here's the relevant portion of /proc/pci

 RH 6.0 & 3C905C TXM Problems
Hi

I had a similar problem with the 3com 509B card. Solution was to configure
the bios of the card with the dos routine on the support disk to NOT USE
plugg and play support. Then it worked just fine with module installation.

I got the same machines, same cards (3c905C-TX), and finally figured out
how to make it work.  You will need to recompile the kernel.  However,
the kernel Redhat distributes is too old for the 3c905C card; you will
have to replace  linux/drivers/net/3c59x.c with one you get from the
Driver Source Code section of
http://cesdis.gsfc.nsas.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html.  I used the
Development/Test version; I don't know if the "stable" version will run
the Tornado or not.

FWIW, I had to compile it into the kernel itself to get it working on
boot.  You can compile it as a module and verify functionality (i.e.
pinging to a dotted quad address), but I don't know how to get the
nameserver, etc. working through rc.d on boot.

I got the same problem but instead of your message I don't get the "IRQ
10" in /proc/pci.
When I try to load the module it says : IRQ0 in unlikely to work ! and
sometimes the systems hangs up !
I tried using the 3c509bTx card with and without a aha152x scsi card,
and as a module and compiled in the kernel. I have a HP vectra VL
computer. I tried also to fix the IRQ of the PCI slot to 10 in the bios.
What can I do ?

That's why you either build your own machine, or buy one designed for
Linux!

You don't need to get a new card.  The 3c905C is a fine card.  The "test"
version of the 3c59x driver claims support for the Tornado card (3c905C).

Get it at:
