 Samba: Hide Server from Server-List
Hi all

We wanna hide our Linux-Machine (SUSE Linux 7.2) from the Server-List in
Network Neighbourhood, like in Windows with: config server /hidden:yes.

We tried it with adding "browse list=no" in global section smb.conf, but
the server is still available (ok, without any shares). I found something
on the net, that I has to shut down nmbd, but I am not shure if I really
can do this, because I have no Idea what it does :-)

Can anyone assist me, with Infos about this service, how safe it is to turn
this off, or some other possibilities?

thanx
Tobias

Why do you even want to have Samba running? Just turn of the entire service.
Syntax depends on your distro, which we're supposed to guess.

We need it for Backup... There is a Script running, which backups all
Changes (Mails etc.). The tar-File is placed in a Share, where the Backup-
Server gets it!

That 's why I cannot shutdown the Service...

Why not just restrict who can access the server?  Then although your users
can see the server, they can't open any shares on it or view contents.

One can also set "browseable = no" in that share to prevent things in that
share from being viewable. Or set "security = user" or "security = domain"
(if there's another password server) for the global share.

Your Proposes are good... That's the Way we're doing it right now. But: It
's not enough... We have a public ASP-System, where thousands of customers
come in (we don't really know who), and they are using it... and we won't
trust them, so we don't wanna them to see anything... because if they see a
server, some of them will starting play around...

that's why... :-)
