I've installed LinuxPPC 5 with GNOME and Enlightenment and whenever i try
and play a sound file (mp3/wav) it either comes out as loud static or really
really slow.

I've got a beige g3 and am running the versions that came with LPPC5.

would an update or something fix it.

i think it's esd that's making the static as when i kill it, the noise stops

but mpg123 does it to

Hi Stewart,

I'm not sure what versions of esd and gnome-audio are on that CD, but
you might want to pop over to
http://www.gnome.org/start/gnomerpm.phtml?dist=linuxppc and see if your
packages are out of date.  For what it's worth, I upgraded everything on
my machine about a week ago, and have no sound static (but I didn't
before, either).

If that doesn't fix it, I have one long-shot: are these affected sounds
ones you created?  I was converting some stuff with sox about a month
ago and, after poring over the man page and meticulously setting
frequency, bit-rate, etc., I neglected to specify stereo sound out (from
stereo input).  It came out really really slow!  If you're converting
stuff and mixing up the endianness, which I've also done, being on a
PowerPC, you'll get static.

You're lucky, I only have Beeps. I cannot hear a thing with wav/mp3
files on my beige G3.

I wonder if the fact that these G3 have a special "sound card" is
related.

i've found that LibOSS works while other stuff generally does not. (you
can set up what to use for sound output in xmms)

   I installed LinuxPPC 2000 on my Mac and the sound "came back", even
in Gnome.

Did you have to do anything else to get the sound, or was this a stock
install. All I ever get out of my SoundCard is the occasional stream of
AWACS errors on boot.

   I simply wiped out my entire Linux drive and installed LinuxPPC 2000
(lite) from scratch. After that, I went into the Gnome setup panel and
activated all sound events in gnome. When I restarted the computer, I
had all the sounds I never had with Q3.
