 XFree86-4.0 crashing on G4 sawtooth
I've installed XFree86-4.0-0.16c and kernel 2.2.17pre10-ben1, and I
think I have the XF86Config file right, although I don't know much about
it. When I type startx, I get a bunch of log messages, then:

-----------------------
[...]
(II) Loading sub module "xaa"
(II) LoadModule: "xaa"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libxaa.a
(II) Module xaa: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
        compiled for 4.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.1
(--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

----------------------
Any idea what would cause that? config file error or genuine problem
with the server? I'd send the whole log file, but it is rather long.
Anyone have a sample config file (besides the one that was with the rpms
- I already have that) that works on a G4?

P.S. XFree86 4.0 works fine with Xpmac, but I need the XFree86 server to
load some custom extensions...

 XFree86-4.0 crashing on G4 sawtooth

I installed XF4 on YDL 1.2 and, updated the kernel to 2.2.15pre19 it ran fine (finally I *had* hardware acceleration
on the damn RAGE 128 !!!)  :)

Try with this kernel (paulus source)

Genuine server problem would be my guess. I assume you tried in 8 and 15
bit depth as well and found the same crash?

Browse the log file for error messages before that crash, in particular
messages from the PCI device probe that might indicate a PCI resource
conflict. XFree has a {*filter*} habit of
reconfiguring the PCI devices without telling the kernel, and if there's
any part of the kernel framebuffer driver used by XFree this part would
be stuck with the original mappings which might point to nirvana after
XFree is done probing.
