 MkLinux and 6100-Newer G3-240MHZ 1MB Cache
Folks,

As, you can see from my title I'm running MkLinux on a 6100.

I can run fine on the 601. But when I try to run on the Newer g3 my system just
hangs. I'm running 8.5 and maybe that is the problem?

I tried the following:

 > The trick is to get the G3 card driver to load before the MkLinux booter.
 > Here's what I did:
 > so it won't load as an extension.

If I remove the MaxPower newer extension, it works fine. With the newer
extension, it just hangs.

Anybody got any suggestions.

Thanks,

I know that MkLinux runs with the Newer G3 card. But if 8.5 is the
problem, have an extra system on a zip or a harddisk partition. Pressing
cmd-alt-shift-backspace on backup then forces the Mac to use the scsi
unit with the highest scsi-number and a system folder as boot disk.

This is how I boot into Linux - and from my zip emergence disk :-).

Hmmm, I don't know.  I've used pretty much this same method, and it works
for me.  What kernel/server pair are you using?  If it's the original DR3,
upgrade to Generic 07 (go to www.mklinux.org).  If it's Generic 07, try 06
(I'm using 07 with no problems, but I've heard of others with problems).

Are you using the libmoto extension as well?  I don't see why it should
matter, but maybe it does.

You might also want to try adding the line

mach_options=bus_speed_hz=33000000

to lilo.conf.  Use 33000000 for a 6100/66, 30000000 for a 6100/60.

Hopefully one of these will work.  It is _really_ nice to get MkLinux
running on the G3.

Good luck,

Whoops, I forgot to add that I'm using 7.5.5, not 8.x.  Maybe you need to
see what is loading before the MAXPower extension (as a scri?), and see if
you can trim them down.

Folks,

1)  Thanks for all the advice. I spent hours this morning ans got nowhere. Just
for your info, I'm using the DR3 version that came with the book. So, I will
try downloading the latest version.

I do not have LibMoto active. It is disabled via conflict catcher.

I also tried removing everything except MaxPower and MkLinux. It didn't work.

2) I will try Mike's suggestions for chaning the  Linux Config file also

3) Is the 7.5 the latest OS folks have gotten to work.

Thanks,

It works like a charm under 8.5 on my 6100 with the plain old DR3
kernel. I posted those instructions originally. You don't have any {*filter*}
hidden extensions loading before MAXPowr and the MkLinux Booter, do you?

BTW, setting the bus_speed_hz shouldn't affect the boot process - that's
just fixing a problem where the kernel assumes any non-601 machine it
doesn't recognize has a bus speed of 40MHz.

Well, I'm not sure about this.  When I leave this line out of lilo.conf,
my machine still boots, but incredibly _s_l_o_w_l_y_.  Others have
reported the same thing.  I've never let it go this far, but some have
claimed that the reported BogoMIPS are below 1.  Maybe this only applies
for the Generic kernels.

Hi:

For 8.5 up, try using extension manager to create a custom set, in addition to
the TYPE tweaks and bus arguments others have mentioned.  Start with "All
extensions off", and add back ONLY the MkLinux stuff:  working from my
non-photographic memory, that's a TYPE-tweaked MkLinux Booter extension, an
untweaked mach kernel, an untweaked MkLinux Control panel, and the untweaked
Newer extension.  Call the set Linux or something intuitive like that and
restart off it.  Should work:  watch the bogomips fly.  I ran into the same
problem - I'm betting you have an ethernet connection rather than PPP (I'm
guessing that the Mac's ethernet stuff is built into the System rather than a
turn-off-able extension, and can only be prevented from getting in the way via
something the above process - you might be able to do something similar with
Conflict Catcher, don't know).  Anyhow, somehow the how-to for people not on
ethernet doesn't quite work for ethernet'd folks - try messing around with the
above if it somehow rings a bell.

This works for me on a 6100/60 with 8.5/8.5.1.  Not tested for 8.6 yet.

Good Luck,

D.

Folks,

Thanks again for all the advice. I 've  tried everything and still cannot get
MkLinux and MaxPower for the newer card to boot together.

I think my only option now is to get a newer version of MkLinus to try. I'm
still using the version that came with the Book (DR3).

I will investigate how to upgrade online.

I will aslo send the card off and hopefully get a newer version of the CD ROM.
I will also try  moving to 8.6 later this week to see if that helps.

Thanks Again,

This is definitely a good idea.

http://www.mklinux.org/development/kernels.html

I can't remember if anybody suggested installing Macsbug.  Have you tried
that?  Nobody seems to be totally sure of why, but that seems to help
sometimes.

If you already have it installed, try removing it.  You can also try
booting with and without Mac VM turned on.

Supposedly these methods can change the way the MkLinux Booter load the
Mach kernel into memory.  Long shot, but it has worked for some others.

You are not ensuring that the MacPower extension/control panel loads
before the MkLinux extensions.

You can change it by changing the resources types of the MacPower stuff
- or by using Conflict Catcher.

I do, however, not have the MacPower myself. But have read lots of it
before.
