 Newer G3 card /w 6100 & MkLinux
Dear all,

I remember somebody told me here that you can use the Newer G3 card on
PowerMac 6100 with MkLinux pre-R1.

I searched through the www.mklinux.org and www.newertech.com websites but
can't find such information.

Can anybody please let me know how you do it?

Best regards,

Eric Yung

Eric, iirc (if I remember correctly) You have to make sure that the card
is enabled and running before bootx comes up. Just stick a couple of
spaces infront of the name of the driver so it loads first in MacOS.
When bootx loads and boots you into linux it only knows about the G3
card and not the 601. After you boot into linux check your message logs
or /proc where you can find what chip your running to make sure
everything works correctly.

Dear James,

I have onhand 2 versions of Maxpower G3 driver (1.03 & 2.05). I found that :

1. With 1.03, no matter what hidden character I put in front of the maxpower
extension, it just won't run before the mklinux splash screen &

2. With 2.05, I can put it run before the mklinux splash screen but when I
click the 'run mklinux' button, it just hangs my Mac.

Do you know if this trick works with which version of the maxpower G3
extension?

thanks and best regards,

Eric

Eric, after some more thought and reading the linuxppc users list I
realized two things -

1) You may have to change the type of the bootx extension to INIT to get
it to load late enough. I saw the following on the linuxppc users list
and went Ahh! that's right thats how to do it. Credit to Bruce Anderson
for his post on the list.

2) You really don't need the extension at all, you can just remove it
and boot it using the bootx application instead. I think they are
seperate programs that share a pref file. The only down side to this is
that you have to completely boot the MacOS before going into linux.

Hope this helps some more.
