Sound on Beige G3 with DVD
I've developed a patch that gets sound working on Beige G3/DVD.  These
machines use a Burgundy sound ship, but it is configured slightly differently
than in the new Blue and White machines.

For more information, see http://www.**-**.com/ ~petro/burgundy.html.

I'd like to hear from anyone that tries to use the patches.

Sound on Beige G3 with DVD

[[ This message was both posted and mailed: see
the "To," "Cc," and "Newsgroups" headers for details. ]]

I have a Beige DT G3/300 with full DVD and other A/V options and it
worked fine with LinuxPPC 2000 out of the box.  Although it's possible
that the kernel I'm using -- now many months old -- configured for MOL
and Ethertap, had it right.  (This isn't the kernel that came with the
LinuxPPC 2000, but I've been using it and getting sound for months.)
Anyway sound has worked since the upgrade to LinuxPPC 2000.

I do start the Mac OS first and check that sound is still turned on in
the CP; sometimes it gets switched off.

I'm glad you're working on this problem for others, though.  There was
a time when I thought my machine was so unique that it might never work
unless I solved the problem myself (and I'm not a programmer).

Really? I was never able to get sound working until I did some
hacking on my own.  What Mac OS version are you booting from?
Mac OS 8.6 and 9 both seem to shutdown the sound chip before
linux boots, and the BootX extension loads before the chip is even
initialized.  Do the audio controls in the GNOME audio mixer work for you?

I'm using Mac OS 8.1

I'm pretty certain the GNOME mixer doesn't work.  But GNOME system
sounds work and the CD player works, as well as the MP3 player and now
the Real Player, too.

Cheers,  David
