Beige G3 Sound and AWACS error f
I've never been able to get sound to work on my Beige G3/266 w/ AV card.
I'm running LinuxPPC 1999 w/ a pre-compiled 2.2.10 kernel that I got
from the kernel ftp site, but I have also tried many others. This kernel
has DMA compiled in. I do not get sound of any kind out. I'd settle for
just CD playthrough. Frequently get AWACS errors in the syslog, usually
error f. It can really crank them out too. Sometimes I have to kill the
syslogd to 'shut it up'. Does anyone have ANY ideas on how/if I can get
sound to work? Would Yellow Dog be any more likely to work, or is this a
kernel/hardware problem I'll have regardless of distro. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. I'm even comtemplating going over to the dark
(wintel) side!

Thanks,
-Rich

As far as I know, no one I've talked to has gotten sound to work on their
A/V G3, which is a shame, because it's a great computer for LinuxPPC. I
have one, and the sound issue is one the main reasons I don't boot into
LinuxPPC more often. If I could get sound working, and my cd-r to work,
I'd rarely boot into MacOS.

Hi. I also have a Beige G3 A/V and I have sound working.
This is for LinuxPPC.
Open up a terminal and type aumix.
You can raise and lower the sound output, mute the internal speaker, use a
microphone, use the cd player, etc. In aumix, R is record which really
means play, and
P is play which really means record...Go figure... set the Line
to R and the CD player to R to listen to cds, raise the headphone volume
up, and lower the internal speaker volume to 0. Don't forget
to save the prefs. That's what I do for my settings to listen to cds.
Also, if you can't hear the cd player, open up a terminal and type
sndvolmix -a 10. The range is 0-15, so
I chose 10 to not blast my speakers. The sndvolmix flags are all screwed
up. Go figure again... The flag I gave you is actually the
auxilliary device, -a, not the cd player, which is -c... -c won't work for
the cd player, but -a will... sheesh...
About the erors you get.. I don't know why it happens because I get no
errors regarding sound.
It took me 6 months to find all that out, and it was because I found the
answer in the linuxppc newsgroup.
About going to the dark side.. I also have a PC with Redhat Linux
installed.
I have a Creative SoundBlaster Live! Value soundcard in it.
There is only a beta driver for it and sound is spotty at best.
A full driver should be released for it maybe 4-5 months from now.
So it's not all warm and rosy on the dark side either.
But I can play Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament on it! :)

I hope it works out ok.

Thanks Axxe. I thought this might work. At first it seemed like an approach I
hadn't tried before, but as it turns out it was one of dozens that I tried
before that did not work. I still don't get even a hint of sound. I really
suspect  I need a different kernel, but haven't had much success building
them and have tried numerous binaries, all with the same result. I suspect
this box will always be mute. Still willing to listen to any other ideas
though.

Axxe,
Now my interest is really piqued!
Sounds like there's hope for sound yet.

I've been trying to get sound going on my beige G3 A/V and you are
literally the first one I've heard that has accomplished this seemingly
impossible feat.

Fot the rest of us, I beg you to elaborate more on your step-by-step,
because I've just spent an hour trying to use aumix as you directed, but
with null success.

What is your kernel/module configuration? mine is 2.2.6-15apmac...May 31
...1999
Which aumix control is the headphone volume?

I tried "aumix -q -v75 -m 0 -c R -c+10 -m q

but no joy.

Sorry... I neglected to mention this because it was simply second nature to
me.
When you boot up the G3, let it boot FULLY into MacOS, set the the Monitors
&
Sound control panel to CD, then use the BootX control panel to boot into
LinuxPPC. The reason why is because the AWACS chip is not initialized until
the
MacOS boot is near completion of the boot up procedure. Though you still
hear
the Mac chime.. I don't know the exact reason why that happens.
If you always use BootX at the very start of the MacOS boot to boot into
LinuxPPC,
you will never have any audio.
So simply boot FULLY into MacOS, and THEN use BootX control panel to boot
into LinuxPPC.
Remember to check the Monitors & Sound control panel. Must be set to CD.
I hope that helped you. I was very frustrated too, till I found that little
piece
of info out.
Good luck.

Axxe,
I tried your steps, still no sound.
What kernel are you using? (do "uname -a")

When I reboot into Linux using the BootX cp, I don't hear the Mac chime,
and if the cd is playing it immediately shuts off.

As Linux boots, there is a message that the sound module can't be found.
I can't find one on LinuxPPC.com.
Playing with aumix makes no difference.

Richard,
I am using the kernel that was on the 1999 CD. Linux Final.
The version is 2.2.6-15apmac.
I never did a kernel compile for my system.
I just grabbed the kernel off the CD.
Could it possibly be that you compiled a kernel
for your system and somehow for some bizarre reason, the sound option didn't get
enabled?
Try using the Linux Final kernel and see what happens.
Whenever I had some major screwup in Linux I would simply reinstall the whole
deal, and start over again until I had it the way I wanted it.
Though I have to say I never had any valuable data on it, so I
could afford to do a reinstall that many times.. and it was MANY!  :P
Good luck.
I hope you get your sound.

Hmm...
I never compiled one, because I couldn't identify the sound driver.
I'm using 2.2.6-15 as well, it is the _only_ one of all the kernels at
LinuxPPC that will run on my G3 without major errors.
Must be something else.
Please stick with me, if we get this going it will help a lot of G3
users.

Could you post what your /etc/conf.modules contains?

Mine has a line "alias sound dmasound", which looks suspicious.

** If anyone else is tracking this, please jump in with suggestions! **
I am so close to sound, I can almost taste it.

Please please please add all of this to the Faq-O-Matic!  I've been trying
to get sound working as well, but with mixed (all puns intended) results.
lxdoom, for example, will allow for sound output for dying monsters, but
alas, they tend to stutter during their last dying groans. =-)

All information in this thread is worth sharing, though!

Thx in advance,
