FTP of Pre-DR3? There must be a better way!
Yes and no. Some things have changed, others have not. You probablywon't be able to go straight
from the PTF 2.1 CD to pre-DR3, b/c the
CD version doesn't have shared lib support (introduced with 2.1u4 I think).
And you'll need to have little-endian file systems for installing pre-DR3
(2.1 defaulted to big-endian, the debate over endianness was interesting,
but in the end, the will of Mr. Torvalds has prevailed.)
And you'll need to have a more recent version of the libg* run-time
libraries.
And, and, and.. you may just want to start with pre-DR3.
However, the executables from the 2.1 release (emacs, xv, etc.) should
work fine.
Slowly and painfully. Not too long ago, I had to resurrect some damagedfile systems by doing a
complete reinstall.. from the 2.1 CDs all the way up
the chain of updates (thank &deity; I had those backed up at least).. 2.1u1,
2.1u2, 2.1u3.. all the way up to #6 (skipped #5). Not fun. Getting from
vanilla 2.1 to pre-DR3 this way would be IMHO sheer agony.
With a 28.8 modem, probably in the tens of hours of solid FTPing.Start the download
_from_a_mirror_site_ *, be sure to take down the full names
of all the RPMs in a file first if you're d/l'ing with the MacOS (32 char
filename is a max that will be exceeded, y'know... %$##! ). Follow all
instructions carefully after partitioning your hard drive. Once you
have everything, installation takes as little as five minutes (hey, it did
for me).
* I use ftp://ftp.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mklinux ,being
in the American Southeast and all. YMMV, pick one that's closer to you.
When it happens, acc'g to the MkL team. Further inquires willpoint out that you're badgering for
something that's free to begin with.
(Not being {*filter*}, just reporting what certainly will happen..)
Someone out there is selling a CD of pre-DR3 for $25 (a guy by the name
of Al Guerra, I forget the URL. A quick search of the listserv hyper-
archives will cough it up.). If you have the MkL book, however, and
still have the coupon in the back entitling you to a new, free CD from
Prime Time Freeware, you may still wish to wait. It's your decision...
