 Shadowing in Linux
is there a program out there so that I can shadow my linux box's passwd file?

Scientists have told us that it takes 41 muscles to frown and 17 to smile
this leads to two conclusions:
A) Scientists have WAY too much free time on thier hands!
B) Frowning uses more muscles, and therefore burns more calories.

Yup. Look for a file called (something like) shadow-3.1.1.tar.gz on
sunsite.unc.edu (or mirrors thereof). I've downloaded it, but haven't
yet installed it.

P.S. I'm in Winnipeg too, so you can give me a call by voice if you want.

Of course, it's on sunsite.unc.edu. There is a patch with it,
but I am not sure it fixes a huge problem in the login program.
You can bypass authentication using the -f switch, so you should
edit the lmain.c file and comment out the things regarding '-f'
preauthentication.

You can test it by logging on from the console prompt
as -froot or doing rlogin localhost -l -froot. In both cases,
you shouldn't succed getting in without a password...

Yes, thats it, but i think there is a newer version.  You also want the patch
that goes along with it.  Ive been using it for ages and ages...

Plese do not post such misinformation. Altough that bug did exist, in
linux and AIX, its been fixed for quite some time. You do not need to
comment anything out of shadow. Further more, trying to log in at the
console as -froot is not the only test you shuold do. It could be that
getty has been fixed to not allow login names that begin with a dash. You
should also try "rlogin -l -froot localhost". The real problem was of
curse with an old version of login parsing its command line in correctly.

Not completely... I've got shadow 3.3.1 installed here, and much to my
surprise I can login as -froot from console with no checking. Needless to
say it is getting re-compiled IMMEDIATLY. rlogin doesn't allow this to work
though, and I have yet to try dialin, but I suspect it will allow it.
