I then deleted the pid file in /var/run and rechecked xinetd status:
[root@lfmdk run]# service xinetd status
xinetd is active but the undersistem is blocked

I then restarted xinetd but it says it can't stop it:
[root@lfmdk run]# service xinetd restart
Stopping xinetd:                                              [FALLITO ]
Starting xinetd:                                                [  OK  ]

rechecked its status and got again:
[root@lfmdk run]# service xinetd status
xinetd is dead, but id file exists

any ideas? Please help

run it manually with the -d switch.  it will probably tell you what's
wrong.  Also, check /var/log/messages.
