I did a tail to:
/var/log/messages

and found this:
Feb 11 20:26:29 hitstation inetd[24214]: execv /usr/sbin/in.identd: No such
file or directory

What does this mean?  Is something missing?

You are missing the identd server package (pidentd RPM in Red Hat Linux)
which verifies the users name for stuff like irc and a few other
services you might access on the internet.

Sure, but not necessary, personally I'd remove the in.indentd line (comment
it with a #) from /etc/inetd.conf and HUP inetd.

hi,
i recently read the same thing you describe below,
the writer of this artice i read argues that indentd is not a
security hole (since the server-administrator configures what
will be the server's response - this is explained in the manpage
quite nicely)
but the identd can be of use for the administrator in case
of an attack to the server since one should be able to
find out about the remote-attacker...

Does default install of Red Hat put this in.identd file in?  If so, what
actions can cause it to disappear?   I fear that someone might have hacked
my system.  Please give me advice.  What other things should I look for?

To audit your install              rpm -Va > /tmp/verify

look at /tmp/verify  for results.

This built me a tight ipchain firewall rule set
   http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/firewall/index.html
I used DENY, hardcoded external addresses, logged everything.

As part of the instruction and if you read the script, it will
give several suggestions as to where you install the firewall.

Should I dedicate a machine just for firewall?  if so how do I got about
doing NAT and also how do I secure the firewall so it can't be attacked?
Please point me to some good sites if possible thanks!

A seperate box is safer. Less applications to exploit.
    http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/firewall/index.html
script did 90% of all my work. Told it to let everything
from the surfing box (192.168.xx.xx) out/in

Wall--->cable_modem--eht1-->firewall_box--eth0--->Hub<--eth0--surfing_box

Told the firewall box(24.10.23.157) @homes gateway.
Ran  netcfg on the surfing box and indicated firewall_box was
it's gateway.  Surfing box's /etc/resolv.conf
                search localdomain grlnd1.tx.home.com
                nameserver 24.34.47.3
                nameserver 24.34.47.4

I picked up ~134 urls on security while lurking and spent a weekend
reading when I received my cable modem about 5 months ago.
Should have marked good ones.

Would have sent them to you but your email address looked as good as mine.
Figured I would be flamed if I posted them.

try      locate security      on your linux box

if locate complains, do a    updatedb

I don't think the default install includes this.  I found I was missing it
too.  I had to install the rpm for pidentd which was on my RH6.0 cd.
