Firewall testing
I am attempting to test my firewall. What is the best and most through site in the net which will give me a report of problems with my firewall? Thanks, Todd Please respond via e-mail if possible.

I have used Steve Gibson's "Shields UP!" website. While he is targeting Windows systems, it still is useful for testing firewalls as it probes common services. https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 -- Prasanth Kumar kum...@home.com

www.mycio.com does a {*filter*}cop scan. The best. It costs about $80 per scan and you have to buy a minimun of 6 scans so $480 bucks get you going. http://www.**-**.com/ will give you a FULL 65534 TCP scan for $5.00, yes, 5.00. Or you can get unlimited scans for a month for $9.95. Come to think of it, I don't know if the {*filter*}cop scan is a full 65534 port scan or not. I suspect not since it finishes so quickly. It's a very new site (3 days) so I haven't had a chance to really analyze their scan. I use {*filter*}cop so I know the power it has. I'd recommend going to http://www.**-**.com/ and doing their thing first. You can't go wrong for that cheap. If you need more, then use the www.mycio.com. Wally -- Strangers in your computer? Or you can ask your friend to download nmap, saint etc and scan you for free. You can even scan your own box absolutely free. Install Linux and do it yourself, i can imagine that 5$ is quite cheap for a person that does not have the time or knowledge to install a unix system, but the tools are out there, absolutely free. What else than an nmap scan does hackerwhacker offer for $5 ?

Why not just get a copy of nmap and do the scan yourself for free? Or use Saint. Beats the heck out of paying for it. -- Jim Richardson Anarchist, pagan and proud of it WWW.eskimo.com/~warlock Linux, because life's too short for a buggy OS.

Do you pass any of that $5-$10 onto the programmer of nmap?

To properly test a firewall, you would need to run the nmap or saint from another remote network...not everybody has access to this. <snip> -- Prasanth Kumar kum...@home.com

My girlfriend gave me a haircat just yesterday. For free. Took us about one hour though. I used to have my hair cut for $10, it took about 20 mins. What's the better way? There can't be no clear answer. Depends on how much your time is worth and how good the friend works for you. Jens

These are valid concerns, but relative to what? Even if you run nmap yourself, did you personally inspect every line of the source code to guarantee there are no bugs that would make it miss a port? If you want, you can open up a "sucker" port on purpose with netcat and see if HackerWhacker catches it. netstat -a is a tool everyone should run. If you've only got one machine, without a firewall, netstat should be all you need. The original HackerWhacker was written for sysadmins to test firewall situations. However, the recent popularity of personal firewalls has made it indespensable to individuals also. If you aren't just doing a "DENY EVERYTHING", firewall rules can be tricky and misconfiguration an ever present danger.
I think if you open up a random "sucker" port and see if HackerWhacker catches it, you'll convince yourself we do a complete job. I protect my own systems using HackerWhacker. Privacy policy prevents me from revealing how many other Remote Scanning sites do also. Wally -- Strangers in your computer? Don't be the last one to find out.
