digital alpha xl 266 stalls during filesystem creation
Hi,

I tried to install Linux (RedHat 7 and Suse 6.4) on my Digital Alpha XL 266.

All works well until the formatting of the filesystem starts - then the
output
freezes and the machine is{*filter*}.

I have a standard XL 266 with 48 MB RAM and a 1G HD (SCSI Quantum Fireball
1080s).

I tried partitioning with fdisk, diskdruid, arcinst in several
configuration.

I argue that I need more RAM.

Any help on this is really much appreciated.

If the format actually starts, chances are the partitioning is OK.

You probably *want* more RAM, but it's doubtful that 48M is the cause
of this particular problem.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just raising the question:

Are you absolutely sure it's hung ?

How long did you wait ?

Remember this *is* a 266Mhz CPU, Not a 2Ghz P4.

I had an XL266 die on me a few months ago. Prior to its death, it had
RH7.1 installed on it (a few times). As I remember the format seemed
to take forever, (it was much larger than a 1G drive though). I went
to bed after a couple of hours assuming it had locked up, but to my
surprise, in the morning it had completed.

One problem you might be having is a bad SCSI connection.  Unplug the Alpha,
then open it up, and remove all the drives from the SCSI chain, boot this
way.  Turn it off, plug one drive in, then boot, going on until you have all
the drives back in.  This gives the machine time to sort out it differences
with the SCSI controller, and it should work in formating when you have all
the drives back in.  I had the same problem, but be sure to keep the Alpha
on for a long time to make sure it is not just going very slowly.

Hi,

thanks for your help but unfortunately nothing works :

o no pci network card
o no other scsi devices than hd and cd
o I waited 1,5-2 hours for formatting 900 Mb without checking blocks - that
should be sufficient even for a xl 266

Now I have no more ides besides adding more RAM - which I think is only of
little hope because 48 MB Ram
should be also sufficient in my opinion for a text based linux. Even NT runs
fine on this machine with 32 MB.

Seems I have to go back to Windows :(.

Cheers

Did you try the SCSI chain unplugging, my machine has only an HD and CD-Rom
(well a floppy too, but not SCSI) and that is what solved it.
