I am trying to install RedHat 5.0 on an AlphaStation 200 4/166 I
purchased from Onsale.

I have created diskettes from files images/avanti-s.img and ramdisk.img.

I boot from the installation diskette using the following command:

The kernel seems to be starting smoothly, including detecting old
partition information on /dev/sda.

Then I see the following:
VFS: Cannot open root device 08:02
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:02

The kernel is not prompting for a ramdisk.

Any suggestions?

        Try out with

        boot dva0 -file "vmlinux.gz" -flags "root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdiak=1
prompt_ramdisk=1"

  Hi!~!!!! Im just curious as far as the maturity of the Linux - Alpha.  I have
been toying with the idea of getting a non-intel based Linux box.

My main question is that, if I get Linux installed on it, can I do that stuff
that I can normally do on an intel based pc?  Stuff like compiling cool WMs
like Enlightenment or Afterstep... etc. Also can I also use TV/Tuner cards with
it using bttv?  Stuff like that?

I'd appreciate any feedbacks you may give me...

wow! i think i am one of the other 26 people who bought one of the as
400 ! :)  i, too, am having that same problem! i tryed the fix, and sure
enough, it got me past that silly error... now i find that the disk i
made the ramdisk on, is bad :( oh well!
