Eisa configuration utility wanted for Alpahaserver 1000 4/200
I got an old unused alphaserver1000 4/200 and I am intending to
install linux to that server.Previous data was deleted from the
server. When the arc firmware initialize the server it announces that
theres something wrong with the configuration and inthe system setup
theres message that EISA configuration utility should be run from the
floppy.Problem is that I dont have the floppy and compaq files told me
that ECU isnt possible to download from the web.So I should find the
licence and obtain the floppy from the Compaq company.
Well Im asking is there possibility to get the ECU by mail from
someone who would like to help me.
Thanks advance.

drill through the arc menus, and switch to the SRM console..

Then you do not need to run the eisa utility, if I remember correctly, that
was used to place a configuration in firmware of what addresses and
interrupts to use for the eisa slots.. because  UNIX, VMS and NT could not
probe the options on the eisa bus to set them up them selfs....

However Linux can.

And yes the eisa setup utility is 3'd party software which is why it cannot
be downloaded from Compaq. You'd have to buy it from them.   Also, their are
TWO versions, One for VMS/UNIX and one for NT

In article <zZ2t8.775$G%5.2...@news.ono.com>, fernando.rol...@ono.com says...
----------<snip>--------------

Would this same disk work on a 2100?

If not, where can I find one?

Please reply to: als#hal-pc.org - not to the spamcatcher address :)

Thanks.

While the firmware will complain, the ECU is not required to run Linux on
Alpha

The ECU is needed to setup the eisa interrupt data for UNIX and some ARC/NT
This info was kept in firmware so the OS knew how to talk to the eisa
modules that were installed.

For Linux, it's not needed, the kernel does the setup during the init
sequence.

there is a separate ECU for  Unix and NT  your best bet is someone in this
group, as it was third-party software (Not Compaq)  Use the unix version and
just accept all the defaults.

Errm ... Have you ever actually _tried_ it with a {*filter*}ed EISA config ?
Sure, Linux does the setup thingie all by itself, once it is _booted_.
But to get to boot, you still need to access the HD or at the very least
the floppy, which unfortunately requires the computer to use some
interrupts, hence a working EISA config.
And whats more, the firmware will not even let you come to that stage
where you could try to boot.

Cool. Anyone has references for this ?
Cheers,

Hannes

I dont exactly know whymyold message has been rereleased but...
I did got two working ecus months ago.Thousands thanks to them who
emailed them.
My main problem was that as 1000 4/200 didnt boot because the machine
had lost its configuration.I wasnt able to install linux or other os
because I couldnt use arc or srm console. After I reconfigured the
machine with the new ecu floppy I was able to use arc console.

Now Im very happy e-smith alpha version server owner :)
I can recommend the e-smith alpha version to everyone who
want preconfigured functional server with preinstalled imp webmail :)
