 mail file permissions in /var/mail

Hello :

I noticed the follwing in our solaris 2.5 machines
the groups have READ WRITE permission for the user mail
file under /var/mail/
and the group is not "mail" only users with UIDS less than
10 have mail file group set to "mail", other users have their
corresponding groups and its readable and writable by the
group.

any hints why ? anything wrong in setup somwhere or is it
a bug ? [serious one I would say ]

Thanks

anand

 mail file permissions in /var/mail

Any SunOS 4 clients around?  SunOS 4 tends to set the mail box
to owner:group (but mode 600).

Or perhaps a wrongly configured MUA?
