Solaris 02/02 Companion CD Questions KDE and Gnome
I downloaded the CD image for the 02/02 Solaris 8 software companion CD
Burned it
Installed it

Now....

How can I start either KDE or GNOME.  I wanted to get these running on
Solaris simply because I am a little more familiar with them from my Linux
box then I am with CDE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can download GNOME 1.4 from Sun.com

Then it's not installed properly.

There is an install script in the Gnome directory.

But I don't recommend that you install it.  Wait for GNOME 2.0 from Sun.

You have hit that one dead on.  I installed Gnome-1.4 from the Bonus
Software set and was amazed to see Red Hat icons on the Gnome desktop.

Agreed.  I recently tried it (GNOME 1.4) on an Ultra 1 200E with 384 MB
of RAM, and it ran like a pig.  Heck, even moving opaque windows was
slow (but maybe GNOME 1.4 doesn't know how to talk to a Creator 3D
frame buffer properly).  I intend to waste^Wspend some more time
playing GNOME 1.4 - in my copious spare time...

I can only hope than GNOME 2.0 is substantially faster, and
comes with a PDAsync style application (among others).

Oh, and change the default window manager.  If I wanted a
"Start" button, I'd be using Windoze.  Just make everything
available by right clicking on the desktop, and I'll be happy.

They have their "pilot" for the pal pilots.  I would prefer to be able to
sync with a real PDA.

I run GNOME 1.4 on an ultra 5 with 576 MB of RAM and it's not bad.  I think
Sun made some changes to either Solaris or to GNOME, because I did a fresh
install of both the other day.  It used to be almost useless to use, not
anymore.  I used 07/01 prior and I ordered the 02/02 media kit a month ago
but never installed it.  I was waiting for a better video card then the POS
PGX that's installed.

It's damn fast on a GeForce3.  Acutally KDE seems to be even faster.
