We'd like to replace the ancient CDE 1.3/1.4 used in Solaris 2.7/2.8 by
CDE >= 2.1
Is there such a product out there ?

Tell that Sun. But maybe they'll learn that they can't sell "desktop" machines
witout a useable desktop... ;-(
But Gnome nor Window Maker aren't choices yet due stability problems. And
AFAIK they both miss support for Asian locales ;-(

Does anyone know whether KDE supports asian locales and AFS (Andrew File
System) ?

Note that you're mixing version schemes there - Sun's CDE 1.4 is based
on Open Group CDE 1.0.10 (TOG went from 1.0.10 straight to 2.1 for
various reasons, including syncing up with Motif versioning), but with
Open Group Motif 2.1 and various other extensions.

Is there some functionality that TOG CDE 2.1 offers that you're missing
in Sun's?  (The major difference I'm aware of is that 2.1 actually
supports Xprint, while Sun's CDE does not yet.)

I'm not aware of any for Sparc, but I think xig.com sells one for x86.
(I know they do for Linux, not sure if they support Solaris as well.)

This is exactly the missing feature. We're trying to port and enhance some
packages for Solaris used for bioinfomatics and got stuck in the fact that
Solaris still misses libDtPrint and related tools&&daemons ;-(
(Still trying to get parts the software working, Sa, So, and today since
6:50am...)
Is there a chance that Sun will offer this in a seperate product (yes, we
would PAY $$ for this), early access (yes, we'd like to debug it and report
bugs/problems - like the bug in libXp I reported today in
news:comp.windows.x), unsupported release or whatever...

Another problem is that CDE for Solaris still has a lot of
bugs/issues/ease-of-use problems. I'm currently putting a list together.
And it will be a long list... (and some of the bugs did not appear in
AIX/CDE nor TED...) ;-(

okay, asian locales, I can understand. But what does a windowing system,
have to do with what FILE system you use?

Not the desktop itself but the desktop file manager should support
viewing/editing file ACLs (like dtfile's "sdtfprop" ("File Properties")). And as
far as I can remember the KDE stuff didn't recognize them six months ago. And
we're thinking of introducing AFS...
