 Problem with FreeBSD 4.3-RELEASE

I installed FreeBSD on my brand new system running an AMD Athlon 1.33
GHz , it uses the ASUS A7M266 DDR motherboard and 256 Meg DDR RAM (PC2100).
My motherboard came with a built in sound card, which I did not want, so I
got the SB Live! Value sound card. I re-compiled the kernel and after
re-booting, FreeBSD detected both the onboard sound card and the SB Live!
Value card. I did a "sh MAKEDEV snd1" cuz I wanted only the creative card to
be used, but it does nothing apart from playing Audio CD's. XMMS tells me
that there is a problem with the plugin and FreeAMP tells me that the
deviceis busy, what do I do to remedy this problem?

Any help will be greatly appreciated cuz FreeBSD, the sweetest OS on a SWEET
box like this is ALOT of fun!

Thanks in Advance!

You should disable the onboard card in Bios and/or via any possible hardware
jumpers (if they even exist).

Despite it being the lesser desired card, in all probability, it is
responding to the same device type and parameters as a soundblaster.  That
being the case, BSD is simply discovering two device that respond to the way
you have compiled the kernel to look for a soundcard.

If you cannot completely disable the on-board sound device, then you are
probably going to have to live with that device and not the soundblaster.
Alternatively, it may be possible in Bios to pick some obscure values for
the on-board sound, that will cause it to not respond to the same values as
the soundblaster (or vice versa), if you cannot completely disable it.

Good Luck.

I have disabled the sound card in the BIOS, but FreeBSD ignores the BIOS.
And there is no way of assiging it values because its a PCI device, I
checked in the BIOS. I will try and enable the sound device and see if that
remedies the problem.

Instead of compiling the pcm driver into the kernel, try loading just
the emu10k1 kernel module. (put "snd_emu10k1_load=YES" in your
loader.conf) It might work...
