Error: _setutent: Can't open utmp file:

I installed g++ off my Slackware 3.0 disc, and it hosed my system.  When
I try to login at the console it says:

_setutent: Can't open file: No such file or directory
_setutent: Can't open file: No such file or directory
No utmp entry.  You must exec "login" from the lowest level "sh"

I am running 1.2.12 with shadow passswords.  Also, a new error popped up
on boot up:
el3_interrupt(): irq 3 for unkown device.  The computer has also lost
its network connectivty.  Please help if you can.  I'm stumped.  Please
also mail a reply, as our newsfeed has been rather spordic lately.
