 book for Bourne shell scripting?

Hi all,

I'm starting to learn shell scripting and would like to get a good book
for reference.  Can anyone recommend a book for learning to write Bourne
shell scripts (that's what most of the ones in my work seem to be
written in).

Or maybe a good website?

Just one, which starts at the very basic and is *very* good:
Stephen G. Kochan and Patrick H. Wood: Unix Shell Programming, Hayden
Books.  ISBN 0-672-48448-X.  Was around 30 bucks some yrs ago.

Thanks for that.  Just done a search on Amazon which showed a 1989
version by those authors for UKP 19.25, but more interestingly, a 2003
version (with the same name but as yet unpublished - due out 28 Feb
2003) by the same authors for UKP 15.39.  I might hold off and get the
newer version when it comes out.

Then again, I might just get the older one as the shell can't really
have changed that much over the years and I have a few scripts to write
next week.  Talk about jumping in at the deep end!!

I suggest that you get the older version.  I have it and find it a good
reference for writing portable scripts.

Consider this venerable book:

This is a great website with lots of useful documents (I was looking for
some guides in other areas and this site just about covers them!).  And
most of the guides are in PDF format so I can view them on either a *nix
box or a Windoze box.  Nice one.

One of my favourites is Blinn's "Portable Shell Programming". Not for
beginners maybe, but something you definitely want to read to learn
solid, defensive shell scripting.
