Video Card Problem (NVIDIA GeForce4) on Linux 7.2
Hello,

I just recently installed RedHat Linux 7.2 on a brand new Dell 8250
which includes a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Graphics Card.  No problem with the
installation but when I try to start the X server it crashes.  7.2
bundles XFree86 4.1.0-3 which I'm assuming doesn't support my graphics
card since it's a year and a half older than the card.  A couple of
questions then:  Does anyone know if a newer version of XFree supports
this particular card?   Does anyone know where I can find rpms for newer
versions of XFree86?  Is there any restrictions on what versions of
XFree86 I can run with the 2.4.7 kernal?   If my card isn't supported by
any version of XFree86 is there some way I can use some sort of  generic
setting?  I don't really care about 3D, accelerated graphics at this
point, I just want to get something up and running.  Thanks and sorry
for rambling!

.... i'd start by checking the xfree logs in /var/log. you could also:
[bash] nohup startx
then inspect the nohup.out file for clues. might go here
about card support: http://www.xfree.org/

Have you tried the drivers on the nvidia.com site? I have several
GeForce cards that are perfectly accelerated using these drivers. With
RedHat 7.2 you should have pre-built binaries. If not, it's a fairly
simple matter to re-compile the kernel module. The only caveat with the
Nvidia version versus the XFree version is that it doesn't seem to work
well with the framebuffer console.

You can use a generic VGA setting but would probably be disappointed by
the resolutions and colors.

Exits,

The driver for the card you are using is produced and distributed by
the vendor.  Download and install the proper drivers as per the
instructions found on their website:

http://www.nvidia.com/

Be sure to read the instructions.  Some users end up having to edit
their XF86Config file by hand and it can be tricky.  Be sure the
module inserts itself into the kernel.  You may have to use insmod.
Its all in the documentation.
