 Shuttle HOT 603 & Linux

hi all,

i'm going to be upgrading a linux system (from a DX4 100) to an
AMD K6, and have been having a hard time finding compatibility
information about Linux when used with the new motherboards.  after
searching the net far and wide, i turn to you, the linux users,
for help:

If anyone has any insight to offer about how well Linux works (or
doesn't work) with the new Shuttle HOT 603 & AMD 640 chipset, i'd
love to hear about it, as this would seem to be my board of choice.

thank you muchly in advance,

Will

I've bot the HOT-603 and the K6: they work very well, no problems.

What's the max. bus speed on that board, anyway?  I know that the 640
chipset is supposedly rated up to 100MHz, but will the board go that
high?

the information i've found says that the top speed is 83MHz.  more
information about it and other hardware can be found at www.tweakit.com
(highly recommended).

thanks also to those who have taken the time to reply to my initial
post.

Yes, it's 83.  It's next year's chipsets that are rumoured to go to 100.
BUtmine is running just fine right now at 83 using FPM memory.

mmh, I can't share the successes in this thread. When I use the "Safe Setting"
from:

http://www.anandtech.com/hot603.html

My Linux 2.0.30 hangs when mounting/checking file systems. When I enable
"Read" and "Write" Pipline, it's better with occasional freezes when cranking
up ppp dialout or starting netscape. That with underclocking a 233 K6 with 210
Mhz
to get 30 MHZ PCI bus speed.

I have to say that I did not get around to install the latest Buslogic driver or
Linux
kernel nor done any more tweaking.

The anandtech side talks about Flash-Bios upgrades which would improve
PCI bus performance - the two flash bios upgrades on the CD-ROM ( or from
Shuttle's ftp site - Web page is still under maintenace ) give trouble installing
-
one says: you don't have the right Bios version, the other says: "sorry, cannot
erase flash memory" - maybe I am lucky here.

The board may be ok when you have IDE but you may run into problems
with SCSI PCI boards.
