 Garbled display after leaving X
So I'm booting Redhat 8.0 to runlevel 3.  Then I fire up X to try out
various new Window Managers (current favorite = Fluxbox).  All is well
in X and my video card (ATI All-in-wonder Radeon 32MB) seems to
perform flawlessly.

However when I leave X, it terminates and leaves me with a hopelessly
garbled display (colors, random text, all kindsa junk).  I can type in
commands, but I can't see what I'm typing (usually "shutdown -r now").
This seems to happen with several different Window Managers.
Needless to say this is a pain.  Can anyone help this newbster out?

Are you also running framebuffer for your linux console? I used to, and it
sucked. So now I use plain console without the fb driver.

If necessary, you should be able to fix this by hand whenever you
switch to text-mode by using the restoretextmode utility.
(But you won't be able to see what you're typing.)

Try keying blind, "tput reset"

Last time I had this problem, I believe it was because my video card memory
settings were wrong, and X was using console font-memory space and other, to
store part of its screen data.  At any rate, when I reduced the amount of
memory I was telling X was avaliable, the problem went away.  You could try
doing that.
