Corrupt partition table - help !
My personal laptop PC crashed last night.  I can see the tears well up
in your eyes, but my question is:
How can I recreate the partition table* if those partitions include
Win98 (FAT32) and Linux (EXT2, SWAP) partitions ?
I know there are utilities that do it for Windows (FAT, FAT32)
partitions, and that (dos) fdisk /mbr will re-create the master boot
record, but this will not restore my Linux partitions.

Any ideas ?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Bal

it is strange to know that all is gone.. last week I saw something
similar, but it was the hd itself wich died (no recovery was possible).

BTW, try, in sequence:

a) every install-cd have somewhere (during the 'install') a 'recorery'
section - similar meaning words and/or commands and/or menu item, find yours

b) if not, find somewhere the tomsrbt mini-distro

at the moment you are at the console prompt - in any of the a or b
terms, just ask extfsck /dev/hdX --> your ext2 partitions. Every ext2
partitions must be verified.

then..

c) again with your install-cd, ask it to (at the boot prompt):

lilo: linux single mount root=/dev/hdX --> your '/' partition

since you are there, just ask:

# lilo

and voil.. your linux comes back. (hope so).

everything right, except this item:

linux: linux single mount root=/dev/hdX --> your '/' partition

obviously, you did perceived that it was the boot prompt.

Thanks, I'll try tonight, but I don't think it will work because:
I tried fdisk -l /dev/hda from my Linux rescue CD last night, and was
worried to find:

hda1 - windows
hda2 - linux
hda3 - unknown?

Bearing in mind my original root partition was on hda6, (/boot on
hda5, swap on hda7 and home on hda8), I'm worried I've lost my root
partition.  I tried mounting hda2, but could see nothing...???

Corrupt partition table - help !

There is a HOWTO that might help, called Partition-Rescue . You might
hunt it down and read through it.

Partition-Rescue suggests a tool called gpart that "guesses" partitions.
You can find it on http://rpmfind.net.
