I use XFree86 but not the mouse server.  I'd like to be able to change
the speed that my mouse cursor flys around my screen.  Is there a way to
do this?  Thanks for any pointers.

Look at the man page for xset.  E.g. xset m 10

There are more options for mouse speed as a part of accessx -
stuff built into X windows to help people with disabilities.
My web page has more info on this (otherwise poorly documented)
feature.

Oops, my mistake - I remembered wrong - accessx has capabilities to
move the mouse cursor using the keyboard (and varying its speed, etc).
